LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – If you have driven by the Expo Center these past few days, you are probably wondering what all that equipment is for.
It’s all part of this year’s Utility Expo, showcasing the latest machinery and innovations.
Officials with the Common Ground Alliance say the Kentucky Expo Center is the only place the Utility Expo can showcase what these machines can do inside and outside.
With the rainfall just this week on Tuesday, people having some of the equipment onsite meant it was at the right place at the right time.
“This equipment is to keep our community safe and connected,” Khrysanne Kerr said.
Kerr is with Common Ground Alliance, a member-driven association of nearly 4,000 damage prevention professionals spanning every facet of the underground utility industry.
Kerr explained that certain machines help reveal the buried infrastructure that keeps our water running, lights on, and homes heated. One particular machine helped them clear the Expo after Tuesday’s heavy rainfall.
“It’s where a giant sweeper and giant pressure washer come together to expose underground utilities or, in the case of last night, vacuum out manhole covers or job sites covered in water and debris,” Kerr said.
There are miles and miles of machines that can do this and more at this year’s Utility Expo. Organizers estimate thousands of people from across the country will check out the different equipment covering the Expo center, both inside and outdoors.
The layout of the Kentucky Expo Center allows people to participate in live, hands-on demonstrations.
Organizers say it also helps reach the next generation of construction workers.
“It’s one thing to be in a classroom and learn, but it’s another thing to get that piece of equipment in your hand and get excited about your career and where it can lead,” Kerr said.
Officials say every dig is important. They are asking people to call 811 before they dig. They say it’s not just for the professionals but for the homeowners as well.
